Elderberry (Flowers, Berries)
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has a rich history of use dating back thousands of years in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia.
Elderberries and elderflowers are best known for their immune-boosting properties. The small, dark purple berries are rich in antioxidants—especially anthocyanins—as well as vitamin C, making them popular in syrups, gummies, and teas intended to shorten the duration of colds and support general immunity. Elderberries must be cooked or dried before consumption, as raw berries can cause digestive upset in large amounts. Importantly, the leaves, stems, and roots of the elder plant contain cyanogenic glycosides and are toxic. They should never be consumed and can cause nausea, vomiting, or more severe poisoning.
Elderberry tea has a rich, fruity flavor with deep berry notes and a hint of tartness, making it both flavorful and soothing.
