Bachelor’s Button
Bachelor’s Button (Centaurea cyanus), also known as cornflower, is a hardy annual native to Europe. Historically, it was a common sight in cornfields, hence the name "cornflower." The plant has been cultivated for centuries for its vivid blue and purple flowers. In folklore, bachelor’s buttons symbolized romantic devotion.
The bright blue petals are edible and can be used to decorate salads, desserts, and to add a beautiful blue-purple color to tea blends. Medicinally, the plant is used for eye ailments and minor wounds. While it doesn’t have a strong flavor or potent medicinal qualities, its visual appeal makes it a popular addition to any tea party.
As a tea, Bachelor’s Button has a very mild flavor, often described as subtly sweet or grassy with a faint floral undertone. Its gentle properties make it a match for relaxing teas, and it blends well with chamomile, lavender, or mint to enhance both flavor and appearance.
