Bee balm

Bee Balm

Bee balm (Monarda didyma), also known as bergamot or wild oregano, is a vibrant flowering plant native to North America. Bee balm belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is known for its aromatic foliage and showy, tubular flowers that attract pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.

Medicinally, bee balm is used to treat colds, sore throats, and digestive issues, thanks to its antimicrobial and soothing properties. Its leaves and flowers can be used fresh or dried in teas, tinctures, and poultices. In the kitchen, bee balm can be added to salads or used as a garnish, and its flowers make a colorful addition to floral arrangements. The plant’s strong scent, reminiscent of oregano and mint, also makes it an effective natural insect repellent.

When brewed as a tea, bee balm offers a bold, spicy flavor with hints of citrus, mint, and oregano. The taste is warming and slightly peppery, making it a comforting drink for colds or digestive discomfort. Monarda didyma, in particular, has a bergamot-like aroma, which contributes a citrusy brightness that pairs well with honey or lemon.
